Fun DIY Essential Oil Projects for Kids

Whether you are on Spring Break, or just home with your kiddos, it can be hard to keep them entertained everyday. You might be looking for some fun activities or projects you can do with them to keep you all happy. Have you ever thought about putting that stash of Essential Oils to good use? Yes, you can use many of those oils that you love with your children as well.

First things first, let’s talk safety. When using Essential Oils with kids, you have to ensure that you are using kid safe oils. Citrus oils are a great choice because they are safe for children but also encourage feelings of cheer and happiness. One of our favorites is REVIVE’s Citrus Delight. This is a blend of citrus and vanilla that can help you feel refreshed and uplifted. Other gentle oils you could use would be Lavender, Geranium, Cedarwood, Marjoram, Spruce or Pine to name a few. Another appropriate option could be REVIVE’s Stress Easy which is kid safe, but also a super calming blend which may be very helpful right now.

The next thing you want to remember is to always take care when children are using Essential Oils. As you know, they are very potent, and can be harsh for a little one. For younger kids, don’t have them handle the bottle to add the drops; instead let the child count them as you add the oil to the recipe. In addition, no matter what their age, it is recommended that the Essential Oil be added to the carrier before handling it with your hands/skin. Also, you should protect the surface that you are working on with a barrier of some sort; a disposable plastic tablecloth or a large tray should work just fine.

Now that we’ve got the safety precautions out of the way, let’s get to the good part. Below, you will find 3 DIY projects that are appropriate for different age groups. Let the older kids get creative by making up their own blends to use in the recipe. So. go gather up your supplies and have fun!

Scented Playdough

2 Cups Flour
½ Cup Salt
2 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar
1 Tablespoon Oil (vegetable, nut, or seed)
10-15 Drops Essential Oil of Choice
¾ Cup Hot Water
Optional: Food Coloring

Combine all of the dry ingredients into a large bowl and make a well in the center. In a separate small bowl, mix the essential oil and food coloring (if using) with your carrier oil, then pour into dry ingredients. Add water into bowl and stir together well. You may knead it by hand a bit and assess if it needs more flour. If so, add in small amounts slowly, giving time for it to absorb.

Soothing Sugar Scrub

12 oz Glass Jar with Lid
1 Cup Granulated Sugar
½ Cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
10-15 Drops Essential Oil of Choice
(Lavender or Stress Easy are good choices)

Optional: Lavender Buds or Dried Flowers of Choice

In a bowl, mix together coconut oil and essential oils. Stir in sugar and flower buds if using. Scoop into the jar and close tightly. To use: Apply in circles to damp skin to gently exfoliate and calm your mind.

Unwaxed Lava Beads
Glass or Gemstone Beads of Choice
Metal Beads of Choice
Stretch Cord
Optional: Super Glue
Essential Oils of Choice

This is a project you can get really creative with. Choose any beads you like that coordinate together and string them on the stretch cord as desired. When finished, wrap around your wrist to make sure it will fit, if not, adjust it. Tie the string tightly with a double knot and glue if desired.

To wear: apply 2-3 drops to the lava stones, put on your wrist and inhale as needed. The scent should last for hours but fade by the next day so you can wear a different oil the next time.
