Essential Oils for your Dog on the 4th of July

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration in America. With BBQs, pool parties, and fireworks, us humans enjoy many fun times outdoors. Unfortunately, our furry counterparts are not always keen on the idea of loud noises and lots of people running around.  Luckily, there are several natural ways to help soothe your dog’s nerves while you continue to celebrate the birth of our nation.

Natural Remedies

Many dogs have noise anxiety and are easily frightened by the banging of fireworks or excited kids yelling. Being prepared with calming items before the chaos begins is key.

  • Swaddle Therapy– Many dogs are calmed when they are held tight. A thundershirt, vest, or even a human’s shirt that applies constant, gentle pressure can aid in calming their fears.
  • CBD– REVIVE’s CBD for Pets is an ideal way to soothe an anxious dog and manage stress. Just a small dose before the fun begins, and it will help to ease your dog’s mind.

Sound Therapy– Before the fireworks start, put your dog in a safe space and play relaxing or happy music for them. This will also minimize what they can hear outside.

Essential Oils

Dog’s rely on their sense of smell immensely, but we also have to consider how sensitive it is. Many Essential Oils are safe and even beneficial for use with canines. The best way to utilize this natural therapy is to get the dog used to the scents a few days prior. It is suggested that you work with the dog to help them associate the smell of that oil with a calm and loving situation, in addition to the actual soothing therapy of the scent.

Which Oils to Choose

Lavender: One of the safest oils available, this popular Essential Oil acts as a sedative to the central nervous system and promotes tension relief for dogs as well as humans.

Sweet Marjoram:  This soothing and grounding Essential Oil is a great choice for blends as it contributes a compounding calming reaction.

Bergamot: This citrus oil has an incredible balancing effect. The monoterpenes in this oil allow it to be both relaxing and uplifting at the same time.

Vetiver: Centering and grounding your dog can be very helpful when fighting their fears. Vetiver can dispel irritability and calm hysteria.

Roman Chamomile: Another gentle oil, Chamomile is great for steadying the central nervous system. This scent is intensely calming and helps bring tranquility.
Clary Sage: This euphoric oil is ideal in small amounts for dogs. Adding only one drop to a blend for anxiety can increase it’s sedative effects

How to Use the Essential Oils

Once you have chosen the oils you would like to use, create a master blend. This means you would add the Essential Oils to a small glass bottle so that it is ready to use in smaller amounts  when you need it. You may put together your own recipe or use the one below. For a few days leading up to the 4th of July, use your scent with your dog when you have the chance to show them love and comfort while they are actively smelling the blend.

This could be diffusing, putting the scent on yourself where the dog can smell it, or adding a drop of the oil to a bandana or collar that they are wearing. For a few minutes, expose the dog to the smell while petting them and giving them positive affirmations. This is helping the dog form a connection between the anxiety blend and the feeling of affection they are getting from you.

If you do not have the opportunity to put time into this little trick, don’t worry. The calming chemical compounds in the Essential Oils will help to do their magic just by inhalation as well. Simply begin using the blend about 10 minutes before the noise begins to encourage a peaceful environment for the dog.

*Please remember that our pups are much more sensitive to smell than us! This means you only need to use a very small amount of your master blend.

  • Diffusion: 2-3 drops in your REVIVE diffuser is an appropriate amount for soothing your dog. Running the diffuser in increments is best. Try 10 minutes on then 20 minutes off.
  • Topical: Add only 1 drop of the blend to a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to ears or down the spine. Do not put it where the dog could lick it off.
  • Application: For a collar, thundershirt, or bandana, apply only 1 drop of the blend onto the material.
