Room Sprays for Every Room

Room Sprays for Every Room

Your home is an extension of you… it has personality and flare. Scent is one of the most powerful ways to express this. From a calming bedroom retreat to a welcoming entryway or a fresh bathroom, the right scent can instantly shift that mood. In this article, we will help you create thoughtfully crafted room sprays to have in each space. Using simple, non toxic ingredients and Essential Oils, you will feel good about using these sprays around those you love. Whether you are looking for cozy, uplifting, or calming aromas, these simple DIY recipes will help you set the tone for each room in your home.

The Essential Oils you use in each spray are what is going to set the mood. For example, oils that have the chemical compounds linalool or linalyl acetate (like Lavender or Clary Sage) will help bring peace and reduce stress. Essential Oils rich in sesquiterpenes like Sandalwood or Patchouli are grounding. While oils that contain limonene or pinene are uplifting or keep you alert.

Room Spray Base

The base of each room spray will remain the same no matter what Essential OIls you add. There are a few options depending on what you prefer, so let’s discuss why you would need these particular ingredients. As you know, diffuser sprays are made with water, not oil, so they will need to be preserved (to not grow mold) and solubilized (to help the EOs and water mix). Some of these options are a little more natural than others, but all are considered safe on the Environmental Working Group scale.
Ethanol Alcohol– High proof grain alcohol like Everclear or Perfumers Alcohol (95-100% ethanol). In order for the Essential Oils to dissolve fully, the percentage should be 25% alcohol to 75% water. The one draw back with using alcohol is that it sometimes leaves its scent behind.
Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside– A non ionic surfactant derived from renewable coconut, palm, and corn sugar. Requires about 4 parts Glucoside to 1 part Essential Oils.
PEG 40– A semi solid solubilizer that is a derivative of Hydrogenated Castor Oil. This ingredient also requires 4 parts PEG 40 to 1 part Essential Oils.
Polysorbate 20– Made from a chemical reaction of a plant based sugar alcohol and Ethylene Oxide. This mixture only requires 1-3 parts Polysorbate 20 to 1 part Essential Oils.
Optional Add Ins:
Hydrosols– aka Floral Waters like Rose or Lavender add even more natural scent to your spray.
Vegetable Glycerin– Helps the scent last longer because it is a humectant.

Preservatives

If you plan on leaving your room spray out at room temperature in each of your spaces, you need to consider preserving it. Because room sprays contain mostly water, they naturally grow mold over time.
If you are properly using Ethanol Alcohol in your spray, this will also act as your preservative. This will typically preserve your spray for about 6 months to a year when stored in a cool, dark place. Additionally, you can add Vitamin E which is an antioxidant and helps preserve it longer as well.
Leucidal– A natural probiotic based preservative made from radishes
Geogard ECT– A non-toxic, eco friendly blend that meets ECOSERT standards
Add all of the ingredients into the roller bottle, pop the top on and rotate gently in your hands to mix. Apply as needed to your face to help prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Take care not to get too close to the eyes.
