This trending Korean skin care staple is popular because it is gentle, moisturizing, and efficient. Once a niche beauty secret, these silky, oil based cleansers are a must have for radiant, balanced skin.

Double Cleansing Method

Cleansing Balms are part of a two-step cleansing method that originated hundreds of years ago in Asia when the women used to wear white paint-like makeup. Nowadays, it is useful to remove sunscreen, foundation, and excess oils. The first step is using a cleansing balm, which is a solid when applied, but quickly dissolves into an oil cleanser that removes impurities without stripping the skin of important oils. The second part of the routine is using a water based cleanser, usually a gel or cream consistency that removes residual oil. When done together, this routine cleanses completely while providing healthy skin and balanced sebum.

Skin Types
One important thing to note is that the recipe will vary based on your skin type. The therapeutic benefits of each carrier oil and Essential Oil caters to each variety of skin, While all of the oils should be non-comedogenic (does not clog pores), some are richer than others to provide the correct level of moisture for your face. As for the Essential Oils, those with acne prone skin would need more antifungal oils, while aging skin needs more rejuvenating oils. So, without further ado, here are 3 different cleansing balm recipes tailored to each skin type inspired by Korean skincare and the Double Cleansing Method.

How to do the Double Cleansing Method

Step 1: Cleansing Balm

Warm a small scoop of the balm in your hands and massage onto the entire face, focusing on areas with more impurities or makeup. Remove with a damp washcloth.

Step 2: Water Based Cleanser

Apply your water based cleanser to your face in a circular motion to rid the skin of any excess oils. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. We recommend REVIVE Radiance Cleanser. Follow up with a moisturizer like REVIVE Renewal Face Serum.

Bonus Recipe: Water Based Facial Cleanser

4 oz Glass Bottle
2 oz Unscented Castile Soap
2 oz Distilled Water or Hydrosol (Rose or Lavender)
Essential Oils: Same as above per skin type
Optional: Add 1 tsp Natural Preservative like Leucidal
Put the Essential Oils into the bottle first, then add in the Castile Soap. Swirl to mix, then carefully pour in the water or hydrosol and put the top on the bottle. Without the preservative, this cleanser has a shelf life of about 3 weeks.
